History

How we teach History:

Our History curriculum, which is based on the National Curriculum, brings the past to life by connecting British and world history to our pupils' everyday worlds. We encourage children to be curious researchers, asking big questions about the events that shaped the society they live in today. By learning to sift through evidence and think critically, pupils don't just memorise facts—they learn to question them.  History at our school helps children understand diverse cultures, the story of human change, and how they fit into the world today.

How we ensure access for all:

Our lessons are carefully planned to spark a real curiosity about the past in every child. We bring history to life using hands-on objects and artefacts, alongside engaging videos, books, and pictures, making sure everyone can fully take part in the learning. We are committed to supporting every child's unique learning journey. Our pupils who need extra support, use exciting, visual, and accessible tools to break down tasks. By encouraging collaborative group learning, we ensure that every pupil feels included, confident, and fully engaged in their lessons.  For children who show a deeper understanding, we encourage them to stretch their skills by sharing their knowledge through presentations and group discussions.

How we develop cultural capital:

History truly comes to life for our pupils through exciting visits to local museums and hands-on "Hook Days." During these immersive sessions, children step back in time through drama and role-play, gaining a deep, unforgettable understanding of the eras they are studying. We love involving our school community, so parents are invited to join in whenever possible. Each class also proudly shares their historical discoveries with the whole school and families through special class assemblies and learning fairs.

How we know your child is succeeding:

Assessment in History is continuous and varied, focusing on written outcomes, oral contributions, debates, and regular "pupil voice" interviews with the History subject leader. A key highlight of our curriculum is our child-led Learning Fairs. These fairs serve as a powerful vehicle for students to demonstrate their understanding. Using multimedia presentations and interactive stalls, pupils teach their peers about the topics they have been taught, reinforcing their own knowledge while inspiring a shared love of learning across the school.

How you can support your child:

Supporting your child's learning at home is both easy and fun! Beyond the wealth of digital resources available online, we highly recommend taking advantage of our fantastic local museums. They are completely free of charge and make a wonderful family day out during the summer holidays. Parents can actively engage children during these visits by setting up small research tasks, encouraging them to investigate specific eras or artifacts.
