Welcome to Ellen Wilkinson Primary School and Children Centre
The school name commemorates Ellen Wilkinson (1891-1947) a feminist, a suffragette and twice elected MP. In 1945, she was appointed as the first woman Minister of Education in Britain. Under her influence, parliament adopted the 1946 School Milk Act, giving free milk to all school children.
Situated in the Mid-Beckton District of Newham’s Docklands, Ellen Wilkinson Primary lies on the south side of Tollgate Road at the junction of Dove Approach.
Being strategically placed in Beckton, we are able to enhance our academic lessons through field trips into the local community. The North Beckton District Park – with green space, play structures and wildlife pond – is in easy access. We are also within walking distance of the Newham Leisure Centre, the East London Gymnasium, The Beckton Globe Library, and several supportive local businesses.
The building structure is one level with an open plan layout. It is designed to accommodate infant and junior children. There are two classes per year group and no class exceeds 30 pupils. The building also houses a self-contained nursery unit for under fives.
On the outside, the school boasts a very generous hard-topped playground, bordered by trees. A large grass playing field is enthusiastically used by the children in the better weather. A garden and wildlife area with a fenced in pond completes the grounds.
